Skynet Championship Series: Season Six, Week 2

Most underrated by the humans: Ok St (wow! everyone hates them, but the computer love them.); K St, Va Tech, Houston

Most overrated by the humans: LSU (relatively speaking... computers have LSU at #3 by a slim margin); Stanford (Andrew Luck love); Oregon; Michigan State

Skynet Championship Series: Season Six

I can't believe it's the 6th season that I've been doing this...

Skynet is back! A wise machine, Agent Smith, once said in the Matrix: “Never send a Human to do a machine’s job.” These inspiring words ring true with the BCS. The time has now come to achieve the BCS purpose – by providing OBJECTIVE rankings. I realize this may be counter to my rooting interests, but it is the only fair way to determine two teams.

So, to be clear, here’s how I devise the standings each week:
1) I take the top 20 of the BCS standings.
2) I input each of the top 20's computer standings from each of 4 computer rankings (Sagarin, Anderson, Colley-Matrix, Wolfe; the other two aren't included because they input human rankings to start and are therefore biased).
3) I let excel calculate the standard deviation for each computer ranking distribution of the top 20. Then, Excel normalizes the distribution, and fits EACH computer ranking onto a 1-20 scale.
4) Finally, the normalized-computer averages are determined (i.e. if Florida is ranked 5.76, 2.55, 2.21, 5.77 in 4 of the polls, which is an average of 4.07, which equals their SCS ranking. This means that according to the polls, they are approximately the 4th-best team in the country).

Most underrated by the humans: Ok St (wow! everyone hates them, but the computer love them.); Houston (undefeated and a ridiculous 12th in the computers, but just 22nd and 20th in the human polls); Va. Tech, Auburn, Kansas St

Most overrated by the humans: Wisconsin, Stanford, Nebraska, W. Va., Michigan St

Of course, there is a long time until the end of the season though. And remember, these are not my rankings, they are the rankings of the only objective entity in the universe... Skynet!

NCAA conference realignments: A lesson in history, leading to a scary conclusion

I'm not as big into college football as other readers/writers on our blog. However, I've been extremely intrigued by the endless turmoil over the last 1.5 years.

I was reading an article on Yahoo which led me to an amazing, well-researched, historical piece on the Atlantic.com , chronicling all of the insanity of the NCAA. Some of my favorite moments:
1) in 1939, freshman players at Pitt went on strike because they were getting paid less than their upperclassman teammates. "Embarrassed, the NCAA in 1948 enacted a “Sanity Code,” which was supposed to prohibit all concealed and indirect benefits for college athletes", but the 'Sanity code' was repelaed within a few years
2) In 1951, the NCAA hired Walter Byers as executive director. Then: " he lobbied a University of Kentucky dean—A. D. Kirwan, a former football coach and future university president—not to contest the NCAA’s dubious legal position (the association had no actual authority to penalize the university), pleading that college sports must do something to restore public support. His gambit succeeded when Kirwan reluctantly accepted a landmark precedent: the Kentucky basketball team would be suspended for the entire 1952–53 season. Its legendary coach, Adolph Rupp, fumed for a year in limbo."
3) At the 1951 NCAA convention, there was a vote of "161–7 to outlaw televised games except for a specific few licensed by the NCAA staff." At this time, they were more concerned that people would stay at home and not attend games (and di not realize how much moeny could be made from advertising on the broadcasts).
4) Then... "On June 6, 1952, NBC signed a one-year deal to pay the NCAA $1.14 million for a carefully restricted football package. Byers routed all contractual proceeds through his office. He floated the idea that, to fund an NCAA infrastructure, his organization should take a 60 percent cut; he accepted 12 percent that season. (For later contracts, as the size of television revenues grew exponentially, he backed down to 5 percent.) Proceeds from the first NBC contract were enough to rent an NCAA headquarters, in Kansas City. "
5) In 1961, Byers "negotiated the NCAA’s television package up to $3.1 million per football season—which was higher than the NFL’s figure in those early years."
6) "In 1981 a rogue consortium of 61 major football schools threatened to sign an independent contract with NBC for $180 million over four years. With a huge chunk of the NCAA’s treasury walking out the door, Byers threatened sanctions." However, Georgia and Oklahoma responded with an antitrust suit, which led to a landmark 1984 case. " NCAA v. Board of Regents of the University of Oklahoma decision, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the NCAA’s latest football contracts with television—and any future ones—as an illegal restraint of trade that harmed colleges and viewers. Overnight, the NCAA’s control of the television market for football vanished." This decision allowed the schools to each sell any games they wanted to... and perhaps more relevant to today's happenings, there was no requirement to share revenues with smaller schools.
7) Interestingly though, basketball revenue from the NCAA tourney COVERED the losses of the football revenue (because the NCAA was just taking a % cut of the football, as opposed to who knows what amount of the revenues from the NCAA tourney). "During the 1980s, income from the March Madness college basketball tournament, paid directly by the television networks to the NCAA, grew tenfold. The windfall covered—and then far exceeded—what the organization had lost from football. "
8) The Atlantic.com touches on a lot of different topics, including the NCAA's "amateurism," and how it never has been accomplished, the fact that NFL players association gets paid $35 million per year for use of their likenesses by EA sports but college athletes themselves get paid nothing, as well as the Ed O'Bannon case, which is trying to get money paid to college athletes for use of their likenesses on jerseys, video games, etc.... but the article all culminates with one theory... the NCAA receives 95% of its revenues from the men's baksetball tournament. ... which leads to some chilling truths:
a_ "if the big sports colleges don’t need the NCAA to administer a national playoff in football, then they don’t need it to do so in basketball. In which case, they could cut out the middleman in March Madness and run the tournament themselves. Which would deprive the NCAA of close to $1 billion a year, more than 95 percent of its revenue."
b) "To alienate member colleges would be to jeopardize its own existence. Long gone are television bans and the “death penalty” sentences (commanding season-long shutdowns of offending teams) once meted out to Kentucky (1952), Southwestern Louisiana (1973), and Southern Methodist University (1987). Institutions receive mostly symbolic slaps nowadays. Real punishments fall heavily on players and on scapegoats like literacy tutors."

Which leads me to one frightening conclusion... what is stopping the 4 super conferences (I'm assuming Big East and Big 12 case to exist, or no longer get a spot at the BCS table) from breaking away from the NCAA... AND ALSO forming their own basketball tournament? Suddenly, there are millions more (or whatever it is that the NCAA keeps from that $771 million contract) for the 4 super conferences to split for themselves (ACC, Big10, Pac16, SEC16). I suppose the alternative to this scenario is that the NCAA makes a deal with the Big 4 to save itself... and continue to let the Big 4 do whatever it wants in football. What would be stopping the Big 4 from making a grab for the basketball money too? Not that I want them too, but the Big 4 could even spin it as a way for ALL of the schools to get paid MORE (with of course paying out more money to schools that go farther which, most of the time other than Butler time, is going to be a school from the Super-4).

Skynet Championship Series: Judgment Day in the Year 2010

Judgment Day is upon us... and Skynet has demanded a game that every other person and robot wants... it's Auburn vs. Oregon!

In case anyone was curious, this is the 5th version of Skynet... and the only time Skynet has agreed with the humans. Finally, a year of peace between man and the machines.

Here are the other years, if anyone was curious:
2009: Skynet: Bama vs. Cincy (got destroyed by Florida in a different game); BCS: Bama vs. Texas (got smoked by Bama)
2008: Skynet: Oklahoma vs. Texas; BCS: Oklahoma vs. Florida (won champ, despite Skynet snub)
2007: Skynet: LSU vs. Va. Tech; BCS: LSU vs. Ohio State
2006: Skynet: Ohio St vs. Michigan; BCS: Ohio St vs. Florida (won champ, despite Skynet snub)

Perhaps more interesting, Oklahoma edged out TCU by fractions of a point for #3. In the human rankings, Oklahoma is only 8 and 9 in the polls, and only 7th in the BCS.

Most underrated by the humans: Oklahoma, LSU, Missouri
Most overrated by the humans: Wisconsin, Ohio St, Mich St (the computers do not like the Big Ten this year in any way); Va Tech (a whopping #18 in the computers, but #13 in the BCS).

Skynet Championship Series: Judgment Day 2009

Judgment Day is upon us... and Skynet has demanded a game between the undisputed #1 team in the nation, the Alabama Crimson Tide, and... Big East Champion Cincinnati!

It's years like this that I wish the computers are in charge, because the last thing I want to see is Texas get pummeled by 20 points. For the record, Florida also finished ahead of Texas.

For the record, there are two computer polls (Massey & Billingsley) I don't include in Skynet's ranking. I don't include them due to the fact that they start with the bias of a human literally ranking all the teams in week 1. Both Massey & Billingsley have Texas at #2. Sagarin has Texas at #5, Anderson has Texas at #3, Matrix has Texas at #2, and Wolfe has Texas at #3. In a season like this, the results only further validate Skynet's supremacy... and the biases that humans hold onto and why Massey & Billingsley don't belong in Skynet's ranking.

Most underrated by the humans: Cincy, LSU, Arizona, West Virginia
Most overrated by the humans: Texas, TCU, Ohio State, Penn State

MMBSD: It Ain’t Cool Bein’ No Jive Turkey So Close To Thanksgiving

(For those that don’t get the reference in my headline, watch this…)

In light of Mighty’s being sequestered in upstate New York, I’ve taken the initiative and shall attempt to fill in the role of Monday (Afternoon) Back Seat Driver...

NFL

Same Old Bungals. Just a week after beating the Steelers and looking like a legitimate contender for the AFC crown, the same old sorry Bungals lost to the lowly Oakland Raiders by giving up 10 unanswered points with less than two minutes left in the fourth quarter. I don’t care that they’ve beaten the Steelers and Ravens four times, you don’t let a Bruce Gradkowski-led team beat you.

J-E-T-S, Done-Done-Done! After starting out 3-0, including a big win over the Patriots in Week 2, the Jets have gone 1-6 and are now all but eliminated from AFC playoff contention. Pretty boy QB Mark Sanchez (17 INT in 11 games) and the toothless Jets defense have combined to sink yet another season for Gang Green. All of this wouldn’t be out of the ordinary but for the fact that rookie head coach Rex Ryan spent all summer talking trash and writing checks his fat, flabby ass couldn’t cash.

Hold The Bubbly, Miami ’72! As per their usual ritual, alums of the 1972 Dolphins squad that went 17-0 always pop champagne after the last team has gotten their first loss of the year. In looking at Indy’s and New Orleans’s schedules –– both 10-0 –– it looks like Miami ’72 could have a long(ish) wait on their hands. Indy’s remaining games are @HOU, vs. TEN, vs. DEN, @JAX, vs. NYJ and @BUF. The Saints have a much tougher road, having to play vs. NE, @WAS, @ATL, vs. DAL, vs. TB, @CAR. I figure New Orleans trips up somewhere between the Patriots and Cowboys whereas the Colts might lose to the Titans or Jaguars but that’s it.

College Football

The BCS rankings remained the same for the top seven teams and the only change of note was Oregon climbing from #11 to #8, while LSU tumbled from #8 down to #15, courtesy of Les Miles and the brain-fart to end all brain-farts.

One thing to point out in college football is that while the Pac-10 and Big-10 were playing tough in-conference games, the so-called top dogs of college football (Florida/Alabama) were playing cupcake non-conference games against Florida International and Chattanooga, respectively. Um...someone tell me why everyone thinks the SEC is a good conference? They've reached the overrated platform previously seen in the Big-12 from 2004-2007.

Oh, and just in case anyone missed it, Jim Tressel and his Buckeyes once again mopped the floor with Wolverine pelts, this time courtesy of Tate Forcier's five turnovers (1 fumble, 4 INT’s). Rich Rodriguez’s postgame news conference talked about being “humbled” in the first person. As Ozzie Guillen has shown us, there are few things less tolerable than when a coach or manager makes wins and losses about them. This Ohio State fan hopes that Rodriguez stays at UM for a long, long time; all the signs point to this guy being a narcissistic, self-destructive, temperamental loser.

NBA

Allen Iverson is unemployed and unemployable. I am thrilled.

Ed O'Bannon is Back!

I found this story very captivating. Simply put, Ed O'Bannon (star of the 1995 UCLA Bruins) has filed a lawsuit against the NCAA for "use of former student athletes' images in DVDs, video games, photographs, apparel and other material."

Sports Illustrated has a great commentary on this story by a Vermont law professor, Michael McCann. There are a few interesting points here:

1) O'Bannon's lawsuit is on behalf of FORMER players... AND also seeks an injunction on licensing for current players. Also, O'Bannon's lawsuit is focused on only giving out the compensation after the player has completed school (to avoid the 500 lb. gorilla of paying student-athletes).
My biased opinion: That injunction will never be granted in my biased opinion. I do think it's smart to avoid having student-athletes get paid until after they complete/leave school.

2) O'Bannon's case is based on antitrust violations, based in part on the fact that all student-athletes sign "their likenesses away in perpetuity to the NCAA."
My biased opinion: There's a big difference between airing games on ESPN classic and having likenesses in video games. In regards to ESPN Classic, I actually don't think the players should get any money for those replays, as its a fixed replay of a performance protected under copyright laws. In contrast, having likenesses in video games could be a really strong claim for O'Bannon, as you are talking about creating NEW products. Granted, I haven't played an ncaa football/basketball game in a long time though but if i'm not mistaken, EA sports only lets you play with certain jersey numbers, not names. So is that a likeness? That will be fun for them to debate in court! Then again, it appears that a District Court case in San Francisco has dealt with a similar issue: should retired NFL Players get compensation for their likenesses, even if their likenesses are "scrambled?" The NFL lost that case - needing to pay approximately $13,000 to each retired player for a total of $28 million. Ouch. In that case, the faces, jersey numbers, and names did not match, but other specs (i.e. height, weight, experience) were able to be used to identify the players.

3) The commentary by the law professor foresees a focus on the fact that students aren't in any kind of equal bargaining position... and that they should be able to seek "access to legal counsel."
My biased opinion: This is a tricky issue... and it really opens up a can of worms that the NCAA certainly will not want to open. I'm already imagining things: like if Football "signing day" involved each student-athlete having a lawyer that wanted to play two schools against each other for the best deal. Yowsers.

NCAA Football: Mountwain West Proposes 8-team playoff

I still don't think this will ever happen, but the Mountain West made a proposal to the BCS for an 8-team playoff to replace the current system.

The entire proposal is available for the public to review. The proposal is very professional, and I'd suggest reading it.

Here are some highlights:
1) new criteria for determining who gets an automatic berth - the criteria currently is based on playing at least 20 games against the six power conferences and winning at least 40% of these games. Notably, this criteria results in the Mountain West conference immediately qualifying. It's self-serving, but hey, it's interesting.
2) a committee determines the remaining BCS teams in the 8-team playoff. It's like the NCAA selection committee, only with higher stakes, because you aren't arguing about the last 12th-seed in, you are arguing about 4 versus 5.
3) Their proposal also includes ranking the top 10 teams, where the #9 and #10 teams play in a bowl game. I suppose this way, we are ensured another good game AND that way we all will know the BEST team to NOT make the 8-team playoff!

Parting Gifts for Every College Football Player in a Bowl Game!

This is the first time I've found one article listing all of the different gifts that college football players get for playing in a specific bowl game. Apparently, the College Football Bowl games are actually a longer gift-giving event than Hannukah, as the Bowl games are spread out over 19 days!

I think many of you will find this list entertaining.

Some highlights:
1) Las Vegas Bowl (Arizona vs. BYU) - Nintendo Wii sports bundle package, a watch, and a hat.
2) St. Petersburg (Memphis vs. So. Florida) AND Papajohns.com (NC State vs. Rutgers)- Camcorder, Noise-canceling headphones, Ogio bag
3) Hawaii (Notre Dame vs. Hawaii) - Kicker iKick500 iPod/iPhone Dock, Silk tie, Oakley sunglasses, Kahala aloha shirt, Beach chair, Beach towel, T-shirt, Calendar, Hat, Visor, Backpack, Luggage tags - I think the players should have to try to wear all this stuff at once and use it all at once!
4) Insight (Kansas vs. Minnesota) - Vizio 26" LCD HD TV, watch, Snack pack, hat - I don't know why the snack pack gets listed when they are also giving away 26" TVs !!!!

Lowlights:
1) Motor City (C. Michigan - Florida Atlantic) - souvenir watch, 2-piece leather travel set
2) International (Buffalo vs. UConn) - football, watch, duffel, backpack - Sounds like leftovers to me!

The Hot, Crusty Breath Of An Old Man Lingers...

Three more years? At what point does Penn State have the courage to dip their toe into the future? With all due respect to Joe Paterno – a great man, a good coach, and the leader of a generally honorable program (recent news-making incidents notwithstanding) – how can Penn State believe that their program is best-led by an 82 year old man?

Obviously the world of college football is a troubled place, where coaches make Faustian bargains with the lives, health, and futures of young adults. A lot of these coaches make their names and their money through the exploitation of these kids and don’t think twice about it. In that sense, Paterno is a nice change of pace. But there are other honorable people in college football too. I think Penn State shouldn’t be afraid to find out about these people.

In a way, Penn State’s successful 2008 season might’ve been the worst thing to happen to them. They’re now nominally committed to Paterno for three more seasons because, I believe, they’re just too scared to let go of the past and embrace the future.

Skynet Championship Series: Judgment Day 2008

Judgment Day is upon us... and Skynet has demanded a Big-12 rematch between Texas and Oklahoma!

It's years like this that I'm glad the humans are in charge, because the last thing I want to see is a conference rematch. A cross-conference rematch is okay, but I don't want to see a game that happens every year in conference.

Most underrated by the humans: Texas Tech (computers won't take into account 40 point loss); Boise St
Most overrated by the humans: Alabama, USC
