Really?

Listen up, people. I’m about to blog hockey for perhaps the only time this season.

The NHL has decided to suspend Dallas Stars defenseman Sean Avery for an indefinite period of time due to remarks he made about two of his ex-girlfriends (Elisha Cuthbert (above) and Rachel Hunter (below)).

I just don’t see the big deal here. It may not be what you say in polite conversation at an office cocktail party or at a formal dinner. But I just don’t get why what he said was deemed so inappropriate. I mean, it’s not like he’s lying, is it? Several NHL players are dating his sloppy seconds (and what fantastic sloppy seconds they are, might I add).

What does that say about me that I’m totally indifferent to Avery’s comments? I guess I’ve either been desensitized by the ever-increasing crudeness of our culture or, more likely, I just think we have to pick our battles a little more carefully. Censorship of this variety seems petty to me. Avery didn’t slur anyone, didn’t disrespect his employers, and didn’t commit any crime.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman seems to be taking a page from his counterparts at the NFL and NBA. It seems like this is a precedent that screams “I’ve got sand in my vag and I’m not going to take it anymore!”

Hockey?

So for those us crazy people that stayed up late witnessed one of the great games in championship history when Pittsburgh not only score to tie the game with about 30 seconds to go but then won it in triple overtime. Their goal had 55 saves! I know hockey is so passe but I'm giving Game 6 the Mighty Seal of Approval which means quality watching (I also give the same for Lesbian Cowgirls Know How to Have Fun 7)

Congrats Colonel Sanders!

Our colleague and my very good friend Colonel Sanders got hitched this past weekend. He’s married into a family of hockey royalty, including the soon-to-be NHL Hall of Famer Mats Sundin*. As I told him, he’s going to be Herb Brooks to their Swedish Olympic dreams.

Congrats to our favorite Vietnam veteran, practitioner of Black Ops, and degenerate gambler.

*Disclaimer: His new bride is a Swede by the name of Sundin but she’s not actually from the hockey-playing family. She is, however, the woman that now has the keys to Colonel’s arsenal of weapons and booze.

Congratulations to all three of you.

Messier’s getting his picture on the wall in Toronto this year. Craig and Frank will have to wait until five years after they’re retired before partying in Cooperstown. But all three of them got their ticket punched and will be joining the list of legends. Awesome!
