Meanwhile in the largest cocktail party not at the Playboy grotto, Florida savaged Georgia. Georgia going into the season was the presumptive best team. Florida ended any hopes Georgia had at the championship and announced themselves as a possible candidate. A battle looms between Alabama and Florida for the SEC Championship and possibly for the big time.
What that leaves is two story lines to follow for the next few weeks. Tech is still undefeated and if its able to defeat Oklahoma and Oklahoma State in the coming weeks Tech will get a spot in Championship land (it has already leapfrogged PSU in the BCS standings). However equally possible is a series of round robin losses in Big 12 country, leaving with a crazy cluster fuck for the top of Big 12 South. IF Tech loses the looming specter of another SEC v. Big 10 battle with Penn State playing the role of tOSU would be front and center for multiple weeks. If so then certainly calls of leapfrogging a no loss PSU with a one loss USC or (insert Big 12 team) could grow.
NFL
There's been a number of teams this year that have underperformed this year whether relative to last year's finish or this year's expectations. I will argue the most perplexing has been Jacksonville. Same QB. No major injuries. No head coaching worries. Not an aging team (outside of Fred Taylor). Why? Why has this team gone from fearsome mauler to chew toy for the likes of the Clowns and Bungals? It's simply unfathomable.
Tennessee, seemingly this year's Ravens, with a good defense, a QB that manages the game, and a few fortunate turnovers seem to have all but locked up the AFC South. Outside of Pittsburgh is there any team that you would consider a serious challenge to their title of Supreme Rule of the AFC?
Odds and Ends
While the NBA season is still earlier a few notes from the first week of the season
- I think Andrew Bynum adds a huge bonus to the middle of the Laker's D. A force that was missing when they had to rely on Gasul
- Suddenly the Rocket's won't miss a beat when off-injured McGrady is out, probably the biggest addition that Artest brings
- Danny Granger might be one of the more under-rated players in the NBA
