ESPN lauded the Lady Volunteers' championship victory yesterday as ending a 9-year "drought".
A drought, eh? Let's see: in the 26 years that there has been an NCAA championship, Tennessee has been to the title game 12 times and has won 7 of those. So Tennessee has lost three title games since its last crown in '98 - that does not a drought make. No, a drought is like USC, which won back-to-back crowns in '83 and '84 and hasn't been back to the title game in '86. Better yet, let's look at Coach Vivian Stringer of runner-up Rutgers, who has the third most victories among women's hoops coaches, has led three teams to the Final Four, and has never won a title.
The Lady Vols had a great season (I'm told), and their program and coach are legendary (as I understand). That can't be taken away from them. But a drought? Puh-leeze. Save the crocodile tears, and SHUT YOUR PIEHOLE!
