Finally: Something Positive

I think we all tend to focus on the negative aspects of the sporting world from T. O. whining about not having enough money to Giambi incrediably shrinking skills to Larry Brown's nomadic lifestyle. When something positive comes across the desk it would be nice for us in the blogosphere and/or media to applaud them. This week's installment of "Finally: Something Positive" goes to Shaq. Yeah I know there's a lot of Shaq haters out there. However Shaq graciously offered to pay the funeral expenses for one of the all time great's who passed away this week, George Mikan. There are enough selfish players both on and off the playing field that wouldn't even consider helping their fellow man out (see the numerous posting on Barry Bonds) but you got to hand it Shaq on this one. Helping a family out when they need it the most is truly a commendable activity, so hats off to this week's winner of the "Finally: Something Positive award"

For those that don't quite believe Shaq helped someone out here's the link:

I read that article and the article on Shaq written by Jason Whitlock of ESPN.com's Page 2. I'm not moved at all. Shaq is a selfish baby in my opinion and not nearly enough blame is laid at his feet for the destruction of the budding Orlando dynasty or the death of the Lakers. Fortunately for Miami, he won't be there all that long since he's getting long in the tooth (and wide in the waist). If he were in his prime and had a guaranteed 4-5 more years left in him, I'm sure it would end as badly there as it did in Orlando and LA.

He paid for Mikan's funeral. That is a nice gesture by an otherwise immature and dickish brat. He can go fuck himself.

Why qualify what is truly a charitable and magnanimous act with a laundry list of (perceived) misdeeds? Why can't we recognize the good that someone does without swinging the ax of all the things we may not like about them? Or would you tell all the pro athletes to forget about the millions of dollars and hours of time that they give back to various communities - because so many of them are so distasteful in your eyes (as you've made abundantly clear on this blog)?

You're way, way out of line here, Mo. Save your anti-Shaq tirade for another time. This is a very nice thing he's done for the Mikan family, and even if he is all the horrible things you've called him, Shaq deserves nothing but accolades for stepping up and helping those who are in need. We need to applaud him and encourage others to follow his example.

I'm unmoved by your plea, Hart. Shaq doesn't need anyone to pat him on the back for generosity that regular people undertake on a regular basis in real life.
