This is Publius reporting live from Chicago. Mighty Mike sent me to report on the MLS All-Star game vs. Chelsea. I am pleased to report the MLS squad defeated Chelsea 1 nil.
The MLS All-Stars outplayed and out hustled the boys in blue all night. Although Chelsea was clearly more talented, they considered it a friendly match and the MLS wanted the win. DC United players were the anchor of the match. The backline of the MLS (including DC United keeper Troy Perkins) did a fine job.
Sports a commodity: This was clearly evident. The price tag of the team (2004 = 115 million pounds and growing!!) made it impossible for Chelsea to play a hard match. Now compare that price tag against the MLS. This comments tracks back to athletes becoming economic commodities. Do pitchers throw inside less now versus 20 years ago? Why are NBA players less coachable now versus 20 years ago? Why should the Yankees allow their players to play in the "world cup of baseball??" if the league wont protect them financially against injuries?
Do leagues need to "reinsure" a team for lost wages against the salary cap or lost revenues from tickets sales if their stud player injurers himself in the world cup?
Special cheers to the “drunk bus” aka “bunk drus.” I recommend without hesitation being driven to a game soccer game in a yellow school bus drinking PBR. Good times. If only Mighty can arrange a similar assignment to the World Cup in 2010.
