Hot Stove Part XXV / Preston, Jeromy & Blockbuster Trade

Let's get the small news out of the way first:

1. Preston Wilson signed a one year deal worth $4M to play CF for the Houston Astros. Given how little money that is these days, the Astros are getting some nice upside if Wilson can stay healthy enough to give them 500 AB's. With Berkman, Ensberg and now Wilson, the 2006 Astros have improved their lineup over the National League Championship version of the team.

2. Jeromy Burnitz spurned the Orioles offer of two years and $12M and instead took the Pirates' one year deal worth $6M (with a mutual option for another year at the same salary). For the Pirates, they add a decent hitter at a decent price. Burnitz should be able to hit 20 or more HR if he can stay healthy although the Pirates still won't be competing for a playoff spot this year, likely extending their streak to a 13th season without October baseball. For the Orioles, their miserable winter continues. They can't convince any free agents to join the team and their lone star player, Miguel Tejada, keeps on rattling the cage, trying to get out...

...which brings us to the discussion of the proposed blockbuster trade between Baltimore, Boston and as many as two other teams. Since there are so many permutations of this trade, it's impossible to know which version is likely to happen. The main pieces are the aforementioned Tejada and Boston's Manny Ramirez where Boston would receive Tejada and Manny would either be sent to Baltimore directly or would be flipped by the Orioles to the Mets for Carlos Beltran. Another version of that deal includes the Mets getting Manny outright and sending a collection of pitchers and prospects to Boston and Baltimore, again with Tejada going up to Fenway. My understanding is that some version of a Tejada/Manny trade will go down in the next week to 10 days and perhaps even sooner.
