Worst Comedic Sports Movies

Now that we are in the middle of July, it's as good a time as any to reminisce about some of the worst comedic sports movies in history. Basically, these are borderline terrible movies that if they’re on TV, I end up watching just to laugh “at the movie” more than with the movie.

5. Blue Chips – Nick Nolte coaches a college team with Shaquille O’Neal and Penny Hardaway playing the star players. If you want to see a Who’s Who in NBA from 1994, go to this link from imdb.com. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109305/fullcredits
This movie had about 100 cameos including Larry Bird, Bobby Knight, Dick Vitale, Jerry “The Shark” Tarkanian, Bobby Hurley, and Rick Fox. Other than watching this movie to see if you can identify everyone, there really is no other purpose.

4. Eddie –Whoopi Goldberg gets to coach the Knicks, and the climactic moment of the movie is the Knicks trying to beat the Charlotte Hornets and Larry “Grandmama” Johnson. If they don't beat the Hornets, the Knicks are going to be moved to St. Louis. Seriously, you could never make up a more implausible storyline. If a New York Knick owner ever tried to do this, they would be gunned down. I don’t really remember much else about this movie, other than it made absolutely no sense.

3. Necessary Roughness – A football movie with an incredible cast – Scott Bakula from Quantum Leap playing a 34-year old QB who just enrolled into college, Kathy Ireland playing the kicker, Sinbad, Jason Bateman (didn’t even know he was in the movie until I looked it up), and of course, Rob Schneider saying “fumbelia, fumbleroosky.” The unintentional comedy scale is through the roof on this movie.

2. Johnny Be Good – Scrawny Anthony Michael Hall plays a young high school QB which every school drools over. This movie is more of an educational video of how players get recruited to play for college teams through the use of strippers, steroids, and payoffs.

1. My Giant – Starring Billy Crystal and Gheorge Muresan, the 7 foot 6 inch stiff for the Washington Bullets. Honestly, I’ve never seen this movie, I have no idea what it's about, but it made me laugh whenever I saw the commercials for it.

I saw movies 3-5 in the theater when I was in HS/early college. At the time, Blue Chips and Necessary Roughness were considered pretty good guy movies. Of course, they don't stand the test of time since any movie with Sinbad is going to look a little dated.

Eddie was an absolutely ridiculous movie. I went to see it because it was chock full of NBA players, even moreso than Blue Chips. Check out the cameos, it's impressive. For you Clevelanders, classic Cavs such as Hot Rod Williams, Bobby Phills, Terrell Brandon and Daugherty are in it.

I could not disagree more regarding Blue Chips. Have you even seen it? First, it is not at all a comedy and was never intended to be. Second, it's got some great performances by Nolte, Mary McConnell, and a particularly good piece of work by the late J.T. Walsh, who plays the school's football coach. Finally, that last scene, the press conference - that's just fabulous. I still quote it from time to time.

Blue Chips has no business being on this list. It's a pretty good (not great) sports drama. Go see it before you judge it.

All I have to say with regards to the worst comedic sports movies is Space Jam. Oh and of course there is Wildcats and Kazaam (not a sports movie, but with a sports star). Ah if Shaq only kept on acting.

Hart is right about Blue Chips. It ended up being the only serious movie that wasn't intended in any way to be comedic. The movie just makes me laugh when I think about it, so I put it on the list though it's not of the same category.
MJ - good call on Eddie. That is more like a Who's Who in the NBA than Blue Chips ever was. I forgot they played all of those other teams.
