American Needle v. NFL

As a lowly contributor here at BSD I try avoid issues of actual reporting as that takes time and effort. However with the Supreme Court season starting up I would like to bring attention to what potentially could be a landmark case for sports - a case that could reshape the basic negotiating balance between owners , their workers (read players) and fans. As noted in ESPN back in July the NFL is attempting to be designated a single entity which in turn allows it to have blanket antitrust exemptions. This is all short hand for greater legal power to owners to shape policies that will increase their profit. Given the courts' acceptance of the case I'm guessing that Chief Justice Whitey McWaspy is trying to side with the owners as part of his never ending crusade to bring back the 19th century but then again I'm just a simple blogger without legal training. Nonetheless at minimum it is potentially an important issue that could influence the sports world.

A good website of links of the actual amicus briefs and other relevant information for those interested can be found here
