Since everyone seems to have an opinion now that USC has opened up the biggest controversy for the Championship game since voters thought it was a good idea for the Big 12 to be considered a real conference I thought I'd weigh in. The first is that any opinion whether leveled from a blog, from espn or from Trafalgar square is biased when it comes college football. Followed quickly by there is no way to determine if Florida or M*ch*gan deserves to play in the BCS Championship game. None. Is a close loss to the number 1 team in the country worth more than a a series of close wins? Should Florida be penalized for playing a 1-AA team for its 12th game (note a lot of teams next year will be doing the same thing so it could be precedence setting)? Is the Big 10s top heavy conference tougher sledding than the depth of the SEC? Is the margin in victory back in vogue for determining the winner (it was taken out to avoid running up the score not to mention it tends to overrate offensive teams). It would be nice if Wisconsin could face Arkansas in Capital City Bowl early and the conference that wins gets the prize but alas its not the case. I won't say who deserves it because frankly I don't have a clue and you know what - nobody else has anywhere close to a rational reason why one deserves it over the other.
That said I just want to point the ridiculousness that is the national media's Plus 1 game. The idea here is that you have a playoff between the top four teams to avoid the current controversy of who deserves the number 2 spot. Alright national wankers, please explain who the number 4 team is? A two loss USC team that has choked twice? A Big 12 Champ in Oklahoma that was one horrific ref job away from being one loss. A one loss Louisville team? LSU? Boise State? West Virginia? How about Wisconsin that had a closer than the score said loss on the road to Meechigan? I'm just as clueless about the fourth team as I am about the second team. So please Mark May, after you've figured out the secret from putting on penny loafers, don't sell me that playoffs will end controversy or provide clarity. I'm calling bullshit!
