Cheers and Jeers: World B. Free Edition

Last night at the Q here in Cleveland there was a touching halftime ceremony for one the Cavs all time greats....World B. Free. Yes, that's his real name. Over four years with the Cavs he averaged over 23 points, resurrecting the Cavs (who at the time were an early 1980s version of the Atlanta Hawks but worse) and turning them into a playoff team. His silky jumper would barely tingle the twine. World was originally a New York City playground baller, his game and his trash talking never moved beyond those formative years on the blacktop. World hadn't returned to Cleveland since he left nearly two decades ago due to mutual estrangement. Hence why the ceremony last night was nice...an old friend returning to his playoff triumph. Cheers to the return of World B Free and Cheers to Dan Gilbert and the Cavs organization for pushing it through.

Jeers - To the NY Mets. The Mets have team policy that all players 'must stand at attention and honor the flag" . Recently acquired Carlos Delgado, had been sitting during the 7th inning stretch song to protest the ongoing Iraqi War. Michael Wilpon, whitest guy ever, made clear that Mets would not tolerate such a sign of personal political beliefs. Nothing like exemplifying the values of the USA by putting a loyalty oathe in as team policy. Maybe they should also be forced to film commercial supporting Bush or all players must renounce any other form of citizenship. I'm sure the policy falls into some pedantic legal loophole of job pay can be tied to expressions of political ideology but quite frankly the policy is nothing more than Neo-McCarthyism.

Cheers - To the Hitman. So I too watched Quite Frankly the other night and really wasn't that bad. Stephen wasn't yelling at the top of lungs or putting Greg Anthony is a headlock. It was a pretty civilized although probing discussion with Chauncy Billups and Tayshon Prince. Chauncy if called out Stephen out on him not backing the Pistons this year and Smith almost cracked a smile (I think Stephen has two facial expressions - determined and exasperated). Nonetheless good call to the Hitman for the correctly noting that show isn't as bad as his dancing (both Stephen A.'s and/or the Hitman's)

Jeers - To having only one tv. There is so much good football going on Sunday I am certainly going to feel shortchanged. Cinci v. Pittsburgh for basically the AFC Central. Denver v. KC for the AFC West title (read if Denver wins they basically have the West). The Tuna v. Eli Manning w/friends. Oh yes inter-divisional rivalries. Put it in my veins!

Cheers- To Ohio government setting a record for something. Governor Bob Taft polled in with an approval rating of 6.5% according to the Toledo Blade. That said Taft had an approval rating, according to SurveyUSA, of a whopping 18%. Anyway you cut Ohio can lay claim to the least popular governor.

Cheers To the idea of Sunday Football pre-Game Talk spicing things up. I think on CBS a Boomer v. Sharpe spelling contest would make me more likely to watch the show. ESPN could have a Clayton v. Salisbury street rules no holds bar match. Last but not least a cross network promotion of ESPN's Chris Berman v. NBC's Tim Russert in a "Huge Head" sumo wrestling match could work to.
