The Rookie of the Year votes are in and it looks like I got my wish. Hanley Ramirez edged Ryan Zimmerman out by a nose and Justin Verlander, the pride of Goochland (VA) High School*, handily beat Jonathan Papelbon and Francisco Liriano, both of whom went down with injuries late in the season.
These awards are pretty much an open and shut case. Both rookies are extremely well-deserving and it would be hard to argue that the runner-ups got stiffed.
Because there is so little to say about this, I will point out one interesting bit of trivia here: the Florida Marlins had three rookies finish in the top four in voting, with Ramirez winning and 2B Dan Uggla and RHP Jason Johnson finishing third and fourth, respectively. Pretty impressive.
*This reference is for the benefit of a good friend of mine.
