When do you start rookie QBs?

Well the dam the broke in San Fran and it looks like #1 pick Alex Smith will be starting. It seems to be a constantly debated question as to when is it appropriate to start a rookie quarterback. Is it better to have them wait for a year (Palmer, McNair), a few games (Manning of the Eli variety) or start them practically right away (Roethlisberger, Tim Couch, David Carr, Kyle Orton)?

I fall in the "it depends category". What kind of offensive line/running game do you have? How good is the defense (ala are you expected to win or just avoid turnovers?)What kind of college did you go to (Big 10 competition is different MAC competition)? How quickly can you learn the offense? While you want the development of such a big investment to move along as quickly as possible you don't want the quarterback to be damaged good and get shell shocked? Given those criteria I'm not as certain that starting Alex Smith in San Fran is best idea. That said I leave it open to the floor for an answer.
